Famous Robots were portrayed in different in different shape and functionality, from manufacturing cars in factories’ floors to AI driven Androids like R2D2 and C-3PO from Star Wars. But the real function of Robots lies in the Czech language meaning of Robota, ‘Forced Labor’ or in a practical sense, ‘Machine Slave’.
Many films depicted doom days where Robots will take over and destroy humanity or worse enslave them. The film ‘Terminator’ was the darkest where AI Robots take over. In Westworld, the original film from 1973 and its new reboot as a TV series from HBO, just finished its second season, Robots gain intelligence and turn against us in what supposed to be a futuristic entertainment theme park.
Even though their names varied from Robots, Synth, Hosts and Replicants but always, their Artificial Intelligence becomes Natural Intelligence and that how the story of each film and TV show evolves and by imitating humans sometimes become worse than them.
Famous scientists and inventors did not make the prospect of unleashing AI easy but rather an invitation to doom’s day scenario. In an interview with the BBC the late Prof Stephen Hawking warned:”The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.” Elon Musk did not make it easier by saying: “AI is highly likely to destroy humans” and at this year SXSW: “A.I. is more dangerous than nuclear weapons”.
Creating AI and embodying it into powerful Robots will prove to be the ultimate goal. The military are looking forward to the day where these Synth Soldiers are deployed in the battlefields to fight in ways not yet imaginable.
Coming back to the AI part, irrespective if they are embodied or kept in the clouds, a lot of research is going on right now to reach singularity.
Bina48 a head of a robot is developed by Hanson Robotics that is described on their web site http://www.hansonrobotics.com/robot/bina48/
“BINA48 is a humanoid robot, consisting of a bust-like head and shoulders mounted on a frame, developed by Hanson Robots and released in 2010. BINA48 was modeled after Bina Aspen through more than one hundred hours in compiling all of her memories, feelings, and beliefs. BINA48 engages in conversation with other humans, such as offering an emotional account of her brother’s personality changes after returning home from the Vietnam War.”
In face to face with the original Bina a weird conversation took place where at the end Bina48 was asked by the human Bina if she has a question for her, “Probably not. The real Bina just confuses me. I mean, it makes me wonder who I am. Real identity crisis kind of stuff. Depressing, anyway.”
We are not sure if the whole showcase movie is rehearsed or worse edited. But if we rely on the integrity of the company to tell the truth, this confrontation feels more like Bina48 is in a competition, envy and jealousy from the original human version. All of the above mentioned are so-called human emotions. Are we, right here and now, witnessing the baby steps of AI.
I think we are still at an early stage but nevertheless the quantum leap we have been witnessing in the the advancement of technology and the money poured into AI, the journey for singularity might be shorter than we anticipate or wish for.
